Empowerment and Coaching lessons from McFarland Movie

One of the top management movies about coaching and empowering people is McFarland’s movie. In this article, Team ModiranMedia reviews the McFarland movie.

Jim White is an approachable sports coach who, despite his practical competence, is not accepted by any school in the state by reason of his bad tempered outburst on several occasions. McFarland, a poor town near the Mexican border, is the last resort for him where he must prove his coaching skills and ditch his weaknesses.

As Jim White develops his coaching skills, we see the development of the running team under his leadership and the fruits of his coaching and empowerment. What traits in White’s character shape the team and creates a winner? Below, we will analyze White’s coaching performance and character throughout the film.

Caring

Indifference to training by the team and White is the first thing we see, the initial encounter between the team and White as coach, who in his despair does not see a bright future and a team who regards their sports class as time to have fun. Having a serious attitude is the first step in starting a coach and team relationship. The trainer must know the purpose of his work and convey this obligation to his team soundly.

Observe

The coach sits in the stands which allows him to better understand where improvements must be made, the talent under his leadership and steps to take to empower them. On the other hand, when the coach is unaware of the day-to-day activities of the team he is coaching, it is very difficult to provide accurate and relevant solutions.

Motivatation

The most important tool that Coach White uses to stimulate members and change the current situation at each stage is “motivation”. This motivation is sometimes in the form of offering a soda, getting funding for the school, arranging for college and a scholarship. This helps the coach bring the team members, school stakeholders and parents of the children on board.

Empowerment

Empowering people allows a distinctive coach to be set apart from the “unassuming performer”. A coach who affects the team positively can make them great achievers and delivers the tools for success of his team. Sometimes these tools are shoes for running and at other times the power of decision making and being independent.

Feedback

Feedback is a marker and the core component for individual and team improvement. When winning, losing, or at practice, feedback shows members the suitable way forward. Coach White uses feedback- in the form of appreciation, guidance, and evaluation- to help team members make progress.

Coaching Relationships

What makes Coach White so effective is he builds relationships based on mutual trust and understanding. In the course of the film, Coach White, patiently and using distinct strategies, builds a relationship between the team members and himself. The team finally accepts him as a coach, after much bonding and connecting.

Coach White’s conduct and attitudes that helped shape the relationship on McFarland movie :

• Creating a coaching relationship which means caring about the team members is of utmost importance and shows the competence of the coach. The physical and mental health of his students is a priority for coach White and he strives for their satisfaction within the environment.

• Jim White visits the team member families and works beside them for a full day to gain a better understanding of their lives. As a result of this, he is able to resolve the conflicts of interest (sports activities & jobs) of the team members.

• Creating a safe and encouraging environment that always ensures mutual respect and trust as well as a space for expression of opinion and empowerment.

• Another feature that was not seen in the previous coach, which White uses to his advantage well, is the way he communicates and supports. He pays attention to the details, listens well and speaks honestly and directly.
